Léon, with its population roughly over 200 000, is the second largest city of Nicaragua. It used to be the capital, but since that created some tension between Léon and Granada, another important Nicaraguan city, it was decided to move the capital to the neutral Managua. Léon was founded by the Spanish, and as such it can pride itself with beautiful colonial architecture.
The main square is dominated by the Cathedral of the Assumption. Even though it is nice and tidy, there is nothing special inside. BUT, it is possible to climb a few steep steps up to the roof, which offers the best views of the city and the volcanoes that surround it.
From the cathedral, you can follow the Calle de Rubén Dario to the east. It is an exhibition street of colourful colonial houses and shops. The street ends at the beautifully painted Iglesia el Calvario with comics-like murals. Unexpectedly, behind the church is a small shop where it is possible to buy a beer or some other drink to refresh yourself in the heat of the city. You can drink it in the adjacent park shaded by big trees and decorated with colourful tiles.
Iglesia La Recoleccion, a little bit north, is beautifully decorated inside, with a lot of wood. But what is truly charming is its facade. The yellow-orange frontage looks stunning in the low afternoon sun.
Once the sun is down, continue further west to the university district, full of different pubs and bars. The main university building is also very beautiful. If you fancy a steak for dinner, head to the Al Carbon Steak and Coffee House and enjoy the inner courtyard seating with pleasant evening breeze.
When you find yourself tired of the heat of the city, head to Las Peñitas for a relaxing day on the beach.
