After returning from Chile we flew to Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. This gate to the Antarctica is interesting as a city, being founded as a prisoner´s colony, as well as its nature in the nearby national park Tierra del Fuego. And then of course, there is the Beagle channel.
Landing in Ushuaia
Ushuaia is said to be the southernmost city on the planet. Its landscape is unique, and so is its airport. It is situated on the banks of Beagle channel, surrounded by high mountains towering right from the sea. Even in summer their peaks are covered in snow. They say landing here is one of the best worldwide, and I must agree it is trully spectacular.
NP Tierra del Fuego
The national park Tierra del Fuego is 15 minutes away from the city by taxi. Yes, that´s right, you can take a taxi to the NP. There are short easy trails in the lower part of the park, and then there is the full day hike up to the Cerro Guanaco, which can be nice on good weather, but we weren´t that lucky.
We had more luck on the Coastal Trail, though. It starts at the Argentina´s southernmost post office guarded by a merry nice postman. It is possible to buy postcards, have them stamped with a special local stamp and post them. The postman will happily take a photo with you and also stamp your passport.
The Costal Trail itself winds around Beagle channel, offering beautiful views and places to rest and meditate about the nature´s unspoiled beauty.
Sailing to H island, Ushuaia
There are countless offers of boat trips to the Beagle channel, but only the company Tres Marias has the right to take you ashore on the H island. This island has many endemic species and it is really interesting to see it. Tres Marias can take you there either on a normal small engine boat or on a sail yacht, which is much more fun 🙂
